Clay Kautzman

This month we’d like to shine the light on someone who might be unfamiliar to most. Clayton “Clay” Kautzman. Unless you need to be taken for a ride. No, not that type of ride…a TAP ride! Clay is one of our top TAP drivers, taking homebound seniors to various places four days a week. It was his wife, Virginia, another TAP driver, who got him to start driving for us. Not just a TAP driver who also helps out serving dinners at our Thanksgiving but also delivers meals for our Operation Senior Claus. He’d like to do more but, while retired, he still is quite busy as a handyman at all of his and Virginia’s rental properties. Originally from Mandan, North Dakota, he came out to California due to his stint in the Marines. After getting out he went to school to learn more about computers. Following graduation he went to work for Western Union, GTE, then as a contractor out at Norton. Married to Virginia they have two boys, six grandkids, and one great-grandkid. Thanks Clay for taking time out of your busy schedule to take care of others.

With the end of the school year (except for those attending summer school), it came time to have one last hurrah before we put ours pencils and paper away. After all our instructors do for our students, we here at the center, and alot of their students, thought we should show them just how much we appreciated all that they taught this past school year. Therefore we were happy to host a Teacher\'s Appreciation party where students could show up and let their teachers know how much they care.

We even had some dignitaries including a San Bernardino City Councilman Fred Shorett, Karen Batista, the Principal for San Bernardino Adult Ed, and S.B. School Board Members Margaret Hill and Mike Gallow. After Councilman Shorett led the class in the Pledge of Allegiance, came a quick aerobics warmup led by one of our aerobics instructors, Julia Regan.

Then it came time to recognize all of our teachers, Rosetta Love, Bob Harvey, CiCi Tenney, Steve Micklas, Julia Regan, Avon Hall, Pia Escalante, Ricardo Tomboc, Tracy Johnson, Lisa Ballard, Fred Hawkins, Kim Scarcella, Rita Sicilliano, Emmett Resendez, Carla Lechuga, and Sue Herbert.

No apples were given to the teachers. Instead they were given a box of See\'s Chocolates and an HSC backpack. Of course refreshments were also given to all in attendance. We would like to give our thanks to our hard working educators, as well Jeffrey Court who sponsored the event.
